Another Numeric Method: There is another method by which we can encipher using digits as follows: We leave out the
numbers (8, 9, 0) from the numbers used in the cipher.
A=l B=2 T=3 C=4 J=5 H=6 O=7
D=11 Z=12 R=13 ;=14 S=15 :=16 X=17
V-21 U=22 Y=23 “=24 G=25 F=26 Q=27
K=31 L=32 M=33 N=34 ?=35 W=36 1=37
Notice that this cipher could be used over the telephone or radio, but it wouldn’t be good for letters because
they could be discovered too easily.
Important note: Some may ask how can a brother (the receiver) know what the sender wants, when he sends a letter
with nothing but numbers placed next to each other. Like in the previous example QAM ALAOW? BQTL REIS ALJM?WRI?
[The brothers killed the President of the Republic.)
530400105603501803 014005060030025108001501601300
We say that it is possible, as we mentioned in the second method to eliminate some numbers and use them as
separators, between numbers.
examp1e: We eliminate the numbers like (8. 9, 0) from them, and we choose the number 5. for example.
An example of the second method QAM ALAOW? BQTL W;IR ALDAQLI? [The brothers killed the Minister of the Interior.]
QAM Q-27 A=l M=33
ALAOW? A=1 L=32 0=7 W=36 ?=3S
BQTL B=2 Q=27 C=3 [sic] L=32
W;ir W=36 ;z14 I=37 R=13
DAOLI? A=1 L=32 D=11 A=1 0=7
L=32 I=37 ?=35
35373271l32ll337l436323272336732133127
When we put the number ((0)) to separate between the letters, it would be as follows:
370320701011032010130370140360320302702035036070320103301027
035
To complicate the cipher somewhat, we would put the numbers (9, 8, 0) as separators in one method.
The method of symbols and numbers: We separate the letters of the alphabet into a number of groups, and each
group is composed of a number of digits.
Example: It is possible to make six groups, and so each group will be composed of five numbers, except for
the last group. which would have only four [sic] numbers.
Sixth Group Fifth Group Fourth Group Third Group Second group First Group
IW? NML.KQ F*YU VX:S; RZDOH JCTBA
321 54321 54321 54321 54321 54321
Then we give every group a symbol.
Sixth Group Fifth Group Fourth Group Third Oroup Second Group First Group
e J v ^ Box O
Then after that, every group has a specific symbol and every
letter in the group has a specific number, so the cipher will be as follows
e J v ^ Box O
IW? NMLKO FG*YU VX:S; RZDOH JCTBA
321 54321 54321 54321 54321 54321
Example Form the following sentence by means of this cipher:
AL?JWM ALSA? ALSAB*? XBAHA [The attack will be at seven in the morning.]
AL?JWM 1 O 3 J 1 e 5 O 2 e 4 J
AL.SA? 1 O 3 J 2 ^ 1 O 3 v 1 e
ALSAB”? 1 O 3 J 2 ^ 1 O 2 O 3 v 1 e
XBAHA 4 ^ 2 O 1 O 1 BOX 1 O
The message would be formed as follows:
1 O 3 J 1 e 5 0 2 e 4 J 1 O 3 BOX 2 ^ 1 3 V 1 e 1 O 3 J 2 ^ l O 3 J 2 ^ 1 O 2 O 3 v 1 e 4 ^ 2 O 1 O 1 BOX 1 O.
In order not to mix up the letters when decoding the cipher, it is possible to choose a symbol
other than the symbols present. It is possb1e to choose the symbol (for example) o a circle
with a dot in it, to separate one word from another.
Another method for symbols and numbers: For this, we use seven circles, and each circle
contains four letters, as follows
Example: AQTL ?ZA ALUAWT [Kill this devil.]
AQTL [See original for symbols]
?ZA [See original for symbols.]
ALUAGWT [See original for symbols.]
In order for one to know the context of the message, it would be sent to (the receiver) as follows:
[See the original Arabic text for the symbols.]
It is possible to separate between each word and the one that follows it by placing a specific symbol between
each word (other than a symbol already present.).
3- The Letter method: There are 28 letters in the Arabic language. We eliminate (3) letters from the (28)
letters. and (by way of example) the letters we eliminate are (C-G-Z). and so we have a chart with (5) groups
co aiziing (25) letters as follows
M “ : O A
N F X D B
? Q V R T
W K U ; J
I L Y S H
Note the Arrows found to the right of the chart indicate that we must take the last horizontal letter.
[See original for arrows.]
Example: If we had a word composed of a number of letters like (KAN), when enciphering, the first letter.
(K) would be (WL). That is,for this letter (K), when enciphering, there would be (two letters); one
horizontal letter and the other would be the vertical. The horizontal would be the (W), and the vertical
would be the (L) , and the rest of the letters of the word (KAN) would be done the same way.
If the last letter of the schedule were needed, like (H), then in this case, we would encipher the (H) as
follows: (IA). If it were the letter (N), we would encipher it as follows: (BI) and so forth.
Example: AQTL ?ZA ALUAGWT (Kill this devil.)
AQTL A=MH Q=?L T=?H L=I*
?ZA ?=TI Z=Not found on the chart so we (exchange) the letter (D) for it, and when the cipher is broken,
the true letter is understood from the meaning of the word, and so it would be thus: Z=NS A=M[H]
ALUAGWT A=MH L=I” U=WY A=MH G=IS also not found in the chart, so we deal with it as if it iS an(*), and
when the cipher is broken, put it in its original form (G) G=ML W=JI T=?H. The enciphered sentence would be as follows:
MH?L?HI”TINSMHMHI*WYMHLJI?H.
We must use one of the three letters that were cancelled (C-G-Z) to separate between each word from the
(fol1owing) one.
Note: It would be incorrect to use this chart the same way as the previous one, because it is [too easy)
for an enemy to figure out the context of the message and its cipher. Therefore, we make a specific key
for this chart, which no one knows except for the (sender) and the (receiver.
An Example of the Key: The sender and receiver may agree that the key to the cipher (the table) [be] a
word or a name: ABW ALFRJ (for example) and so the cipher table would be as follows:
Note: we took [something) away from the word [ABW ALFRJ] ABW LFRJ. We removed the Alef (A] found in ALFRJ.
(therefore) the word was: ABW LFRJ and after writing it in the cipher key (ABW ALFRJ), we write the 25
letters of the alphabet that we know, noticing that we have removed the letters which were written in the
key (ABW ALFRJ) [sic) as in the previous table.
Example: AQTL ?ZA ALUAGWU [Kill this devil.)]
?ZA ?=F” Z=We treat it as if it is a D=N; A=”F
ALUAGWT A=”F L=NF A=”F G=We treat it as if it is a “=?A
W=KF T=”Z
Therefore the cipher cons out as follows:
”FB?” ;NFFN”; “F”FNFNY”F?AKF”;
Then we need to insert one of the three letters (C-G-Z) between each enciphered word, so that the letters
don’t get mixed up with each other. Consequently, as an example we choose the letter (Z), and then the
cipher (the, enciphered letter would be as follows:)
”FB?” ;NFZF”N; “FZ”FNF”F?AKF” ;Z
There will not be any mistake when the (receiver) begins decoding the cipher, because he knows that for
each actual letter, there are two enciphered letters. (He also knows] that between each word and the one
which follows it there is one of the three letters (Z-C-G).
Important Note:
1- It is possible to write the secret word (the key to the table) either horizontally or vertically.
2- It is possible when enciphering using the previous table to choose one of the following methods:
A-The table could use a descending-descending system (two arrows down]
B- The table could use an ascending-ascending system (two arrows up]
C: The table could use a descending-ascending system and the opposite tan arrow up and another arrow down.
However, both sides must be aware of this (the sender-the receiver).
-If it happens that any numbers appear in the message while we are using a letter cipher, then we begin,
for example, by writing the numbers (1-2-3…… with letters WAHD-ACNIN-CLAC?) [One-two-three……………]
Note that we do not write ACNIN or CLAC? because we have eliminated the letter ( C ) from the table.
To complicate the cipher we scramble the letters and [make] them uncomplicated in the table.
To [also] complicate the cipher, we can exchange the letter with the one above it and while decoding it,
the receiver takes the letter that is below it. On the other hand, the letter below it can be written and
when decoding it, the letter above is taken.
The coordinates method: In order to devise a cipher with this method, we make a table in which every
letter of the alphabet vertical column and a letter in the horizontal row, and in the table we write the
(25) letter as follows:
Note that we have eliminated the three letters (C-Z-G).
Observation: This cipher (enciphered table) is very easy for any average person to break or solve:
therefore it must be made
more complicated. -
How to complicate it:
1- Scramble the (25) letters of the alphabet in the table without any sequence.
2- Leave some squares in the table blank for subterfuge or for any contingency.
3- Instead of writing the coordinates of the desired letter, we write the coordinates for the letter
above it, and when the receiver breaks it, be takes the lower letter. It is also possible to write
the lower letter, and when breaking take the letter above.
Enciphering using coordinates is as follows:
The key of the cipher is KRM ;?DI [Karem Zouhdi](May God release him).
Example: AST:?D AND ALAOW? MN :D? ALT”ZIB [one of the martyrs died due to the severe torture. ]
Solution: AST:?D A=M32 S=M9 T=R70 :=?32
?=M96 D=R9
AHD A=M32 H=D32 D=RP
ALAOW? A=M32 L=K70 A=M32 O=K2O
W=D9 ?=M96
MN M=D96 N=D70
:D? :=732 D=R9 ?M96
ALT”ZIB A=M32 L=K70 T=R70 “=;34
Z=We substitute with a D=R9 T=R70
Observe that when we began enciphering the sentence (AST :?D AHD ALAOW? THT ALT”ZIB) [One of the brothers
died under torture], we took the letter from above (we didn’t use the actual letter), and the brother who
receives it must take the letter from beneath while deciphering letter).
Likewise there is in the word (ALT”ZIIB) the letter (Z), and it was one of the letters we dropped (Z-C-G).
Therefore, we took in its place a similar letter, the (D), and the receiver would know that from the meaning
of the word.
There are also letters which did not have any [others) above or below, like the (K-H-N-?-W). Therefore, we
apply the same steps which were followed. We look for the letter which is above it, so for example, with the
letter (K), the letter (U) is considered higher than it. With the letter (W), the letter S is considered
higher than it, and so forth.

MILITARY STOLEN VALOR UPDATE
Barnhart, who did serve off the coast of Vietnam in 1969 and 1970, retired 31 DEC 90,
and applied for disability through the Department of Veterans Affairs less than a year
later. By this time, he was passing himself off as a member of SEAL Team 1 with five
Purple Hearts and a nomination for the Medal of Honor. He claimed a scar on his left
forearm was the result of a gun shot, though VA medical records from 1987 said the injury
was the result of his cutting himself on a piece of metal. The VA claim was denied, but
Barnhart was successful after giving it another try — this time with the help of his
congressman — in 2005. This time, Barnhart claimed he suffered from post-traumatic stress
disorder, and pointed to his altered DD 214 to support his claim. During a subsequent
medical exam in Virginia Beach, Va., Barnhart told the examining physician he was a SEAL in
Vietnam assigned to an elite HALO parachute unit. He claimed to have engaged in multiple
combat missions and received two Silver Stars, three Bronze Stars and five Purple Hearts.
But an alleged rescue of a downed pilot, seeing a soldier being blown up by a rocket and
having a pilot die in his arms after their helicopter had been shot down led to his PTSD,
he told the doctor.
Jacobsen told Navy Times, “The awards keep growing. Then he is a SEAL, then he has all
the heroics. I’ve seen this in similar pattern in other cases. The phonies can’t help
themselves. The awards and accolades always grow.” Still, the VA decided in 2006 to award
Barnhart a 30% disability rating for PTSD. The case against him began when Mary Schantag of
the POW Network got wind of the bogus claims. She began an exhaustive investigation that
ultimately led to the state’s attorney’s office looking into the matter. On 25 JAN 08, he
admitted his DD 214 was altered, and that he was neither a SEAL nor a combat veteran. By that
time, Barnhart had received $13,923 for his fraudulent PTSD claim. “He was very quiet and
’fessed up when he was arrested,” said Jacobsen, who is an Iraq war veteran. “He seemed
sincere in his apologies and didn’t deny that he had fabricated his history.” Barnhart’s
sentencing is set for 8 APR in Roanoke. He faces 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for
the theft of government funds and one year in prison and a $5,000 fine for claiming medals he
did not earn, which is a misdemeanor. He also is required to pay back the $13,923 received
from the VA for disability. [Source: NavyTimes Lance M. Bacon

TAX ON VET FIREARMS:
In early January of this year, U.S. Representative Bobby Rush (D-IL) introduced H.R.45, also
known as "Blair Holt's Firearm Licensing and Record of Sale Act." The bill is, at its core
and as its name implies, is a licensing and registration scheme. The measure would:
H.R.45 is essentially a reintroduction of H.R.2666, which Rush introduced in 2007. H.R.2666
contained much of the same language as H.R.45, and was co-sponsored by several well-known
anti-gun legislators--including Barack Obama's chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel. H.R.45 currently
has no co-sponsors. It is in a committee and is not up for a vote. However, this is an
important bill for gun owners because every element it contains--from regulation of all
detachable-magazine semi-autos, to licensing and the elimination of private sales—is part of
the agenda of major anti-gun groups. For additional info on this refer to

Healing for God's Glory
Father, I'm praying for all the Troopers and others in my circle of family and friends in
need of Your healing touch...
For these who are sick, have medical conditions, or have suffered accidents, I ask You to
look upon them with Your mercy and compassion. I know our days are numbered and sometimes
You have a different plan, but You have taught us that sometimes we don't have what's
needed because we haven't asked, and so I ask for healing. May Your Spirit help me when I
don't know what to ask, and above all, may Your will be done.
Heal those with the personal faith to be healed, and those whose friends who have the
faith to ask on their behalf.
If any are ill as a consequence of sin, I ask You to be merciful, to forgive and heal—as
You healed the paralyzed man whose friends lowered him through the roof. Sometimes sickness
or a condition may be caused by an evil spirit; if that is the case, set them free. At times
disease comes as discipline; where that is true, I ask that in Your love and mercy, You
grant repentance and healing. Sometimes an illness is meant to bring You glory; may it be
so for these I'm praying for.
In Jesus' name, Amen.

The fiscal 2010 defense budget extends payments to servicemembers involuntarily extended on active duty under the so-called "Stop Loss" program, but those who received a bonus for voluntarily re-enlisting or extending their service no longer qualify for retroactive Stop Loss pay. The Defense Department put the new policy into effect 5 JAN 2010, modifying eligibility for retroactive special pay to comply with Section 8108 of the 2010 Defense Department Appropriations Act, which took effect 19 DEC 09. Those affected by the new policy who already received Stop Loss payments will not be required to repay them, defense officials said. However, all outstanding applications from affected servicemembers will be returned, along with an explanation of the change in law that makes them no longer eligible to receive the payments, officials said. Department officials announced in March their intention to eliminate the Stop Loss policy, which kept servicemembers on active duty beyond their contracted end-of–service date. While the services work to phase out the policy, officials authorized a special pay of $500 a month for anyone retained on active duty due to Stop Loss. Retroactive payments applied for anyone who served on active duty between Sept. 11, 2001, and Sept. 30, 2009, and the fiscal 2010 defense budget extended that authority through September 2010.

An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch-up jobs into major refinishing jobs.
One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle... It transforms human energy
into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more
dismal your future becomes.
Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they
can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.
Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for
igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race..
A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity.
Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes,
trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper.
A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminum sheet into smaller
pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead
of the outside edge.
A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect.
Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans
and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name
implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.
A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable
screws and butchering your palms.
A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to
replace a 50 cent part.
A tool used to make hoses too short.
Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to
locate the most expensive parts adjacent the object we are trying to hit.
Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works
particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector
magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes,
but only while in use..

An excess of one type of serotonin receptor in the center of the brain may explain
why antidepressants fail to relieve symptoms of depression for 50 percent of patients,
a new study from researchers at Columbia University Medical Center shows.
The study, in a mouse model, is the first to find a causal link between receptor
number and antidepressant treatment and may lead to more personalized treatment
for depression, including treatments for patients who do not respond to antidepressants
and ways to identify these patients before they undergo costly, and ultimately,
futile therapies.
The research, led by Rene Hen, PhD, professor of pharmacology in the Departments
of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at Columbia University, and a researcher the New
York State Psychiatric Institute, appears in the January 15 issue of the journal
Neuron.
Most antidepressants - including the popular SSRIs - work by increasing the amount
of serotonin made by cells - called raphe neurons - deep in the middle of the brain.
Serotonin relieves symptoms of depression when it is shipped to other brain regions.
A new UC Davis study found that elevated levels of folic acid may aggravate metabolic
complications associated with vitamin B-12 deficiency - a serious health concern
that can lead to anemia and neurological damage. The results, which were published
in the December issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, suggest that
it is wise to avoid taking folic-acid supplements unless specifically advised by
a physician.
"There have been concerns that some people may be getting too much folic acid through
a combination of sources, and we wanted to determine if there were reasons for those
concerns," said Ralph Green, UC Davis professor of pathology and laboratory medicine
and senior author of the study. "Our results show that higher levels of folic acid
could set in motion a metabolic imbalance that leads to more serious B-12 deficiency."
Green has had a long-standing interest in folic acid and vitamin B-12, particularly
since the mid-1990s, when the government began discussing fortifying grain products
with folic acid to reduce the incidence of certain birth defects of the brain and
spine. He participated in several expert and advisory committees for the National
Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug
Administration. Today, in addition to mandated fortification of cereals and grains,
many foods like breakfast cereals can be further enriched with folic acid. In some
instances, those foods contain 100 percent of the recommended daily allowance. Knowing
that many people also take vitamin supplements, especially as they get older, he
thought it might be possible for some elderly to get too much folic acid.
"There may be over 2 million individuals with heart failure and type II diabetes
mellitus in the U.S. alone, so this important finding will have fairly broad impact,"
said Dr. Tamara Horwich, senior author of the study and an assistant professor of
medicine in the division of cardiology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at
UCLA.
Previous studies have shown that diabetes increases not only the risk of developing
heart failure but also the risk of death among heart failure patients. This is due
in large part to the fact that diabetes, because it increases the amounts of sugar
and fat circulating in the bloodstream, accelerates the onset of coronary atherosclerosis.
This hardening and thickening of blood vessels is the hallmark of atherosclerotic
heart disease, the most common cause of death in the country. The optimal treatment
for high glucose and fat blood levels among heart failure patients has not been
demonstrated.
The $1.1 billion in new federal funding for comparative effectiveness research presents
a host of opportunities but also some challenges for hospitals. Both the Institute
of Medicine and the Federal Coordinating Council for Comparative Effectiveness Research
in June issued reports on their priorities as required by the American Recovery
and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which authorized the new funding. The documents make
it clear that the organizations see a major role for hospitals in conducting the
research and ensuring that the findings make their way into clinical practice.
The term "medical research" typically brings to mind strictly controlled, randomized
clinical trials conducted at major academic medical centers. But federal officials
are placing an emphasis on studies involving "real patients" in "real settings"
when it comes to comparative effectiveness evaluations, which examine the difference
in effectiveness between drugs, devices and/or interventions for the same condition.
That means more chances for community hospitals to get involved, several experts
say.
This shift will correct a long-standing limitation of traditional medical research,
says Peter J. Pronovost, M.D., professor of anesthesiology and critical care medicine,
and health policy and management at Johns Hopkins University. "One of the things
that is such a missed opportunity is that health care is probably the only industry
that doesn't formally learn from its daily work. We find out what works and what
doesn't in health care in clinical studies." The problem is the studies are so
strict about who can enroll that their findings don't always pan out when applied
in other health care settings, where the patient population is more diverse, he
notes.
"What we need to also do is say, 'How can I be sure that this therapy is also going
to work when I try it in a community hospital or outside of the study?' " Pronovost
says. "The way you do that is by doing an effectiveness study. You loosen up the
inclusion criteria and say, 'Let's just see if I try to do this therapy, what do
I get in the real world?'"
A new study concludes that many doctors appear to have largely ignored a Food and
Drug Administration warning to screen users of new antipsychotic drugs for high
blood sugar and cholesterol, which poses risks to their health and raises questions
about the efficacy of warning protocols in general.
The research analyzed about 109,000 Medicaid patients taking "second generation"
antipsychotic drugs, which can cause increases in blood sugar, cholesterol and
significant weight gain, as well as other symptoms - significantly raising the risk
of diabetes. It was done by health researchers from Oregon, Colorado, Georgia and
Missouri, and just published in the Archives of General Psychiatry.
It found that most doctors never changed their level of baseline screening for blood
sugar and cholesterol, despite a warning in 2003 from the FDA and two other organizations
that these antipsychotic drugs could raise the risk of diabetes in a patient population
that already was at higher risk for this disease.
Taking both calcium and vitamin D supplements on a daily basis reduces the risk
of bone fractures, regardless of whether a person is young or old, male or female,
or has had fractures in the past, a large study of nearly 70,000 patients from throughout
the United States and Europe has found.
The study included data published in 2006 from clinical trials conducted at UC Davis
in Sacramento as part of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI). It appears online
in this week's edition of the British Medical Journal.
"What is important about this very large study is that goes a long way toward resolving
conflicting evidence about the role of vitamin D, either alone or in combination
with calcium, in reducing fractures," said John Robbins, professor of internal
medicine at UC Davis and a co-author of the journal article. "Our WHI research in
Sacramento included more than 1,000 healthy, postmenopausal women and concluded
that taking calcium and vitamin D together helped them preserve bone health and
prevent fractures. This latest analysis, because it incorporates so many more people,
really confirms our earlier conclusions."
Researchers at the Indiana University and Stanford University schools of medicine
have determined how a "chemical chaperone" does its job in the body, which could
lead to a new class of drugs to help reduce the muscle damage caused by heart attacks.
Such drugs would work by restoring the activity of a mutated enzyme, rather than
taking the more common approach of blocking the actions of a disease-related protein.
The team, led by Thomas Hurley, Ph.D., associate chair and professor of biochemistry
and molecular biology at IU, and Daria Mochly-Rosen, Ph.D., professor of chemical
and systems biology at Stanford, report in the journal Nature Structural Biology
published online Jan. 10 that the compound, called Alda-1, acts much like a shim
to prop up a mutated form of a key enzyme, restoring the enzyme's function.
The enzyme, called ALDH2, plays an important role in metabolizing alcohol and other
toxins, including those created by a lack of oxygen in the wake of a heart attack.
It also is involved in the metabolism of nitroglycerin, which is used to prevent
chest pain (angina) caused by restricted blood flow and oxygen to the heart.

A urologist has been indefinitely barred from inpatient surgery for removing the
wrong kidney of one patient and taking a biopsy from another's patient's pancreas
instead of a kidney. Dr. Erol Uke has signed the disciplinary ruling from the Minnesota
Board of Medical Practice, agreeing that his actions justify the board's discipline.
The ruling said Uke could regain surgical privileges if the board later determines
he's competent to do so. (GREAT IDEA)
The Star Tribune reported the ruling did not say where the errors happened, just
that Uke removed the wrong kidney in March 2008 and performed the erroneous biopsy
about four months later.
Uke declined comment when reached at home by The Associated Press.

As you age, being aware of issues related to health becomes more important. Several
illnesses appear more frequently with increasing age. For example, illnesses like high
blood pressure (hypertension), diabetes, high blood cholesterol (hyperlipidemia) and
some types of cancer. Screening is done to find a condition (or risk factor) in a
person who has no signs or symptoms of that condition. The goal of screening is to
identify conditions early. Treatment works better during an early stage of a condition.
Guidance for screening varies, depending on age, gender, past medical history, family
history and other factors. Talk with your health care team about the screening tests
that are recommended for you. The United States Preventive Services Task Force has
studied the effectiveness of screening and suggested the following tests and
immunizations:
• Lipid profile for High Cholesterol, also known as Hyperlipidemia - Every 5
years. May need to be more often if already diagnosed with diabetes or heart disease.
• Blood glucose for High Blood Sugar, also known as Diabetes - Periodically in
patients with blood pressure of 135/80 or higher.
• Weight for being more than 20 pounds overweight, also known as Obesity -
Periodically.
• Bone mineral density for loss of bone health, also known as Osteoporosis - At
least once in all women at age 65. May need to screen at age 60 if at increased risk
for osteoporosis.
• Ultrasound for Abdominal Aortic Aneurism Screening (for Alcohol Use and
Depression) - Once in men ages 65 to 75 who have ever smoked
• Fecal occult blood test (FOBT) (or Colorectal Cancer - Annually for persons
age 50 to 75.
• Sigmoidoscopy or Colorectal Cancer - Every 5 years
• Colonoscopy for Colorectal Cancer - Every 10 years
• Mammogram or Breast Cancer - Every 1-2 years
• Pap Smear for Cervical Cancer - At least every 3 years, stopping at age 65 if
previous Pap Smears normal
• Influenza Vaccine - Annually
• Pneumonia Vaccine - Once at age 65. May be recommended earlier for persons at
increased risk of complications of pneumonia
• Shingles Vaccine - Once at age 60 or later for most people.
• Tetanus Vaccine - Every 10 years.
A retired Coast Guard chief warrant officer 2 who claimed to be a decorated and
combat-hardened SEAL — and managed to get a disability rating from the government — has
pleaded guilty to wearing combat awards he did not earn. Thomas Barnhart pleaded guilty
6 JAN in federal court in Roanoke, Va. to two counts of violating the Stolen Valor Act.
Barnhart served a combined 21 years in the Navy and the Coast Guard. He joined the Navy
in 1969, then moved to the Coast Guard 10 years later, retiring in 1990. He entered the
Coast Guard claiming to be a SEAL who had completed diving school and High Altitude-Low
Opening parachutist school, according to court records. He also claimed to have earned
the Silver Star, Bronze Star with “V” for valor, Purple Heart with four stars, a Combat
Action Ribbon and Vietnam War-era awards. The Coast Guard clerk bought the story and
added the awards to Barnhart’s DD 214. Later DD 214 alterations would add a Navy
Commendation with “V” device, Presidential Unit Citation with three stars, and Vietnamese
Medal of Honor First and Second Class. “Witnesses have stated that the defendant would
spin yarns about his secret missions with the Navy SEALs and describe various combat
situations in which he was wounded,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig “Jake” Jacobsen said
in his comments to the court, which he provided to Navy Times. “As a result of what
everyone believed, the defendant was promoted to warrant officer in the [Coast Guard]
ahead of others, likely as a result of the defendant’s stellar ‘combat record.’ ”
The FDA is warning the public about another scam in which criminals are
posing as law enforcement personnel as part of an international extortion scam. The criminals
call the victims-most of whom had purchased drugs over the Internet or via "telepharmacies" and
identify themselves as special agents for the FDA, DEA, FBI, U.S. Secret Service, or U.S. Customs
Service, as well as for U.S. and Dominican prosecutors and judges. They tell the victims that
purchasing drugs over the Internet or the telephone is illegal, and that law enforcement action
will be pursued unless a fine or fee ranging from $100 to $250,000 is paid. The criminals request
that the money be sent by wire transfer to a designated location, usually in the Dominican
Republic. Victims who refuse are often threatened with a search of their property, arrest,
deportation, physical harm, and or incarceration. Recipients of such calls should refuse the
demand and call the FDA's Office of Criminal Investigations Metro Washington Field Office at
(800) 521-5783 to report the crime. The FDA warns consumers to use caution when purchasing
prescription drugs over the telephone or the Internet. In addition to the increased risk of
purchasing unsafe and ineffective drugs from Web sites operating outside the law, there is the
danger that personal data can be compromised. Victims have also had fraudulent transactions
placed against their credit cards.
An email is making the rounds citing S.2099, a bill that would
supposedly require you to report all your guns on your tax return every April 15. Like many
rumors, there's just a grain of truth to this one. Someone's recycling an old alert, which
wasn't even very accurate when it was new. There actually was a U.S. Senate bill with that
number that would have taxed handguns—nine years ago. Introduced by anti-gun Sen. Jack Reed
(D-RI), the bill would have included handguns under the National Firearms Act's tax and
registration scheme. This has nothing to do with anyone's annually tax obligation. S.2099
disappeared without any action by the Senate, back when Bill Clinton was still in the White
House. To be clear, there is no such bill in the current Congress, and the emails about
S.2099 being sent around are false and unnecessary distractions from real threats.
• Require all handgun owners to submit to the federal government an application that
shall include, among many other things a photo; an address; a thumbprint; a completed,
written firearm safety test; private mental health records; and a fee.
• Require the attorney general to establish a database of every handgun sale, transfer,
and owner's address in America.
• Make it illegal to own or possess a "qualifying firearm"—defined as "any handgun or
any semiautomatic firearm that can accept any detachable ammo feeding device..." without one
of the proposed licenses.
• Make it illegal to transfer ownership of a "qualifying firearm" to anyone who isn’t a
licensed gun dealer or collector (with very few exceptions), and would require "qualifying
firearm" owners to report all transfers to the attorney general's database.
• Make it illegal for a licensed gun owner to fail to record a gun loss or theft within
72 hours, or fail to report a change of address within 60 days.
• Make the owner of a firearm face a multi-year jail sentence if a minor obtains the
firearm and injures someone with it,

FDA has approved Fluzone High-Dose (sanofi pasteur), an
inactivated influenza virus vaccine for people ages 65 years and older. The vaccine is
intended to prevent disease caused by influenza virus subtypes A and B. Fluzone High-Dose is
the first influenza vaccine that uses a higher dose to induce a stronger immune response and
thereby better protect the elderly, whose immune systems typically have become weaker over
time, against seasonal influenza. FDA’s accelerated approval process—employed in certain
cases to help safe and effective medical products for serious or life-threatening diseases
become available sooner—was used in the vaccine’s approval. As part of the accelerated
approval process, further studies are required to verify that the Fluzone High-Dose will
decrease seasonal influenza disease after vaccination. Fluzone High-Dose is formulated so that
each 0.5 mL dose contains a total of 180 mcg of influenza virus hemagglutinin (HA) made up of
60 mcg of each of the three influenza virus strains. Other currently licensed seasonal
influenza vaccines for adults are formulated to contain a total of 45 mcg of influenza virus
hemagglutinin (15 mcg HA from each of the three influenza strains per dose). Sanofi pasteur
also manufactures Fluzone, a seasonal vaccine for the United States approved for use in
individuals ages 6 months and older. As expected, because of the higher HA content, nonserious
adverse events were more frequent after vaccination with Fluzone High-Dose compared with
Fluzone. Common adverse events experienced during clinical studies included injection site
pain, redness and swelling plus headache, muscle aches, fever and malaise. The rate of serious
adverse events was comparable between Fluzone High-Dose and Fluzone. People with
hypersensitivity to egg proteins or life-threatening reactions after previous administration
of any influenza vaccine should not be vaccinated with Fluzone High-Dose, which is administered
as a single injection in the upper arm and is available in single-dose prefilled syringes
without preservative. For additional info on vaccines for flu prevention refer to
