For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Troops B and C, while conducting a Reconnaissance mission along a road were suddenly attacked by a Viet Cong regiment, supported by mortars, recoilless rifles and machine guns, from concealed positions astride the road. Sgt. Long abandoned the relative safety of his armored personnel carrier and braved a withering hail of enemy fire to carry wounded men to evacuation helicopters. As the platoon fought its way forward to resupply advanced elements, Sgt. Long repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire at point blank range to provide the needed supplies. While assaulting the Viet Cong position, Sgt. Long inspired his comrades by fearlessly standing unprotected to repel the enemy with rifle fire and grenades as they attempted to mount his carrier. When the enemy threatened to overrun a disabled carrier nearby, Sgt. Long again disregarded his own safety to help the severely wounded crew to safety. As he was handing arms to the less seriously wounded and reorganizing them to press the attack, an enemy grenade was hurled onto the carrier deck. Immediately recognizing the imminent danger, he instinctively shouted a warning to the crew and pushed to safety 1 man who had not heard his warning over the roar of battle. Realizing that these actions would not fully protect the exposed crewmen from the deadly explosion, he threw himself over the grenade to absorb the blast and thereby saved the lives of 8 of his comrades at the expense of his life. Throughout the battle, Sgt. Long's extraordinary heroism, courage and supreme devotion to his men were in the finest tradition of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself and the U.S. Army.
Donald R. Long's actions took place during the summer campaigns of 1966. This was some of the heaviest fighting Quarterhorse was to see in Vietnam. In addition, one of the gymnasiums on Fort Riley, Kansas, was dedicated to Sergeant Long.

Commissaries Recall Some Tomatoes
Hello Everyone,
I hope you are all doing well and enjoying your summer. I came across this tribute to our Vietnam Veterans who are dying in great numbers.
Please take a moment and remember that most of us who served in Vietnam were teenagers who sacrificed our youth to war. We saw and did things that most people will never see or do and we did it to survive. Even though I would not recommend similar experiences to anyone else, I can say that my war experiences made me a better person, at least I hope so.

John Conley has earned a new award. Congratulations John. But, We're not going to stop praying for you yet. BB
The 47 radiaton treatments are complete. The doctor says we are not looking for remission. We are anticipating full destruction of these cancers. I will stay on hormones until January and then we will verify whether it is completely gone. Then I will receive annual followup verification exams. Now I will see about removing those 2 bad disks in my neck and see if I can make the reunion in August. I trust everyone is practicing The Silent Column. Thanks for all those prayers. I'm not feeling much wear and tear for the ordeal.
Two women friends had gone for a girl's night out.
Both were very faithful and loving wives, however they had gotten
over-enthusiastic on the Bacardi Breezers. Incredibly drunk and
walking home they needed to pee, so they stopped in the cemetery.
One of them had nothing to wipe with so she thought she would take off her
panties and use them. Her friend however was wearing a rather expensive
pair of panties and did not want to ruin them. She was lucky enough to
squat down next to a grave that had a wreath with a ribbon on it, so
she proceeded to wipe with that.
After the girls did their business they proceeded to go home.
The next day one of the women's husband was
concerned that his normally sweet and innocent wife was still in bed
hung over, so he phoned the other husband and said: "These girl
nights have got to stop! I'm starting to suspect the worst.. my wife
came home with no panties!!" "That's nothing" said the other
husband, "Mine came back with a card stuck to her ass that said
'From all of us at the Fire Station. We'll never forget you.'"

Wayne Paddack sent this one in. Somebody was trying to "Hard".
A co-worker got a pen stuck inside our printer. He started to try & remove the pen, but I told him we don't have time for that now, just put a note on the printer telling folks not to use it and then report it to the Help Desk. So he grabbed a piece of paper & scrawled on it.
I left before he finished the note. . . .
About 20 minutes later, 1 of my techs comes in laughing & says he was just in the lobby, saw a piece of paper on a printer & went to investigate.
Below is what he found.. Sometimes things don't always come out the way you want them to........

'LIFE' THOUGHTS BY 'DUCKY'
Marriage changes passion.
I saw a woman wearing a sweat shirt with "Guess" on it.
How come we choose from just two people to run for president and over fifty for MissAmerica?
Now that food has replaced sex in my life, I can't even get into my own pants.
I signed up for an exercise class and was told to wear loose fitting clothing.
When I was young we used to go "skinny dipping," now I just "chunky dunk."
Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.
Why is it that our children can't read a Bible in school, but they can in prison?
Why do I have to swear on the Bible in court when the Ten Commandments cannot be displayed outside?

MARK YOUR CALENDAR FOR NEXT SATURDAY!
As you may already know, it is a sin for a Muslim male to see any woman other than his wife naked, and that he must commit suicide if he does. So next Saturday at 4 PM. Eastern Time, all American women are asked to walk out of their houses completely naked to help weed out any neighborhood terrorists. Circling your block for one hour is recommended for this anti-terrorist effort.
All men are to position themselves in lawn chairs in front of their houses to prove they are not Muslims, and to show support for all American women. Since Islam also does not approve of alcohol, a cold 6-pack at your side is further proof of your anti-Muslim sentiment.
The American government appreciates your efforts to root out terrorists and applauds your participation in this anti-terrorist activity. God bless America
It is your patriotic duty to pass this on.

The love story of Ralph and Edna:
Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to,
doesn't Mean they don't love you with all they have.
Ralph and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day
while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool. Ralph
suddenly jumped into the deep end. He sank to the bottom of the pool and
stayed there.
Edna promptly jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and
pulled him out. When the Head Nurse Director became aware of Edna's
heroic act she immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as
she now considered her to be mentally stable.
When she went to tell Edna the news she said, 'Edna, I have good
news and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged, since
you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and saving the
life of the person you love. I have concluded that your act displays sound
mindedness. The bad news is, Ralph hung himself in the bathroom
with his bathrobe belt right after you saved him. I am so sorry, but he's dead.'
Edna replied, 'He didn't hang himself, I put him there to dry.
How soon can I go home?'

FDA Warns Individuals and Firms to Stop Selling Fake Cancer 'Cures'
Those companies and individuals warned, the complete list of fake cancer 'cure' products and their manufacturers along with a consumer article on health scams can be found here, http://www.fda.gov/cder/news/fakecancercures.htm.
"Although promotions of bogus cancer 'cures' have always been a problem, the Internet has provided a mechanism for them to flourish," said Margaret O'K. Glavin, the FDA's associate commissioner for regulatory affairs. "These warning letters are an important step to ensure that consumers do not become the victim of false 'cures' that may cause greater harm to their health."

Hormone May Help Dieters Keep Weight Off: U.S.
Restoring leptin to pre-diet levels may reverse this problem, they said, offering a way for weary dieters to finally win the weight battle.
"When you lose weight you've created about the perfect storm for regaining weight," said Michael Rosenbaum of Columbia University Medical Center in New York, whose research appears in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
After weight loss Rosenbaum said the metabolism not only becomes more efficient, so the body needs fewer calories, but the brain becomes more vulnerable to tasty-looking treats.

Novel Compound May Treat Acute Diarrhea
The compound - a pyridopyrimidine derivative - targets acute secretory diarrhea caused by E. coli and other enterotoxigenic strains of bacteria, which produce toxins that stimulate the linings of the intestines, causing them to secrete excessive fluid, thereby producing diarrhea.
Diarrhea kills an estimated 1.6 to 2.5 million children every year, according to researchers quoted in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization. Enterotoxigenic strains of bacteria may account for a significant amount of these deaths, according to an article in Clinical Microbiology Reviews. Enterotoxigenic E. coli or ETEC is a leading cause of bacterial diarrhea.
During pre-clinical tests, the compound was associated with a significant reduction in intestinal fluid secretion in an animal model of bacterial diarrhea. It was also linked to reduced fluid build up during laboratory tests on human colon cells. It caused significant decrease in fluid secretion without apparent toxicity.

Should Doctors Be 'Selling' Drugs For The Pharmaceutical Industry?
Moynihan exposes the reality behind the practice with some candid revelations from industry insiders.
Pharmaceutical companies regularly sponsor leading specialists with "generous fees to peddle influence" and promote drugs to the profession and the public, writes Moynihan.
Drug companies will pay influential doctors up to $400 an hour to act as key opinion leaders, and some doctors earn more than $25,000 a year in advisory fees.
Kimberly Elliot, a former award-winning drug company sales representative interviewed by Moynihan, reveals that drug companies desperately need key opinion leaders in order for doctors to believe what they are saying and prescribe their products, because drug representatives are often not believed. Essentially, she says, key opinion leaders are just salespeople.

FDA Requests Boxed Warnings on Older Class of Antipsychotic Drugs
In 2005, the FDA announced similar labeling changes for "atypical" antipsychotic drugs. At that time, Boxed Warnings, the FDA's strongest, were added. The Boxed Warning will now be added to an older class of drugs known as "conventional" antipsychotics. The warning for both classes of drugs will say that clinical studies indicate that antipsychotic drugs of both types are associated with an increased risk of death when used in elderly patients treated for dementia-related psychosis.
"It is important that health care professionals and consumers have the most up-to-date drug safety information," said Thomas Laughren, M.D., director of the FDA's Division of Psychiatry Products in the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. "The prescribing information for all antipsychotic drugs will be updated to describe the risk of death in elderly patients being treated for symptoms associated with dementia."

Study Links Vitamin D to Colon Cancer Survival
The findings of the study - the first to examine the effect of vitamin D among colorectal cancer patients - merit further research, but it is too early to recommend supplements as a part of treatment, say the investigators from Dana-Farber and the Harvard School of Public Health.
In a report in the June 20 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, the authors note that previous research has shown that higher levels of vitamin D reduce the risk of developing colon and rectal cancer by about 50 percent, but the effect on outcomes wasn't known. To examine this question, the investigators, led by Kimmie Ng, MD, MPH, and Charles Fuchs, MD, MPH, of Dana-Farber, analyzed data from two long-running epidemiologic studies whose participants gave blood samples and whose health has been monitored for many years.
They identified 304 participants in the Nurses' Health Study and the Health Professionals Followup Study who were diagnosed with colorectal cancer between 1991 and 2002. All had had vitamin D levels measured in blood samples given at least two year prior to their diagnosis. Each patient's vitamin D measurement was ranked by "quartiles" - the top 25 percent, the next lowest 25 percent, and so on. Those whose levels were in the lowest quartile were considered deficient in vitamin D.

Same Drug, Different Results"
Medicine has moved a little bit closer to the era of tailor-made treatments, based on the unique genetic profiles of individual patients, according to recent research conducted by Dr Rima Rozen of the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI MUHC) at the Montreal Children's Hospital and McGill University. Her study, published June 18 in the journal Pharmacogenetics and Genomics, shows how minor genetic differences between individuals alter the way a common drug affects the body.
Rozen has measured the impact of Methotrexate -- a drug that inhibits the metabolism of folate -- on mice with an altered MTHFR gene, which is a gene crucial for folate metabolism. The results were striking: after treatment with Methotrexate, mice with the altered gene had approximately 20 per cent less hemoglobin and red blood cells than their counterparts with non-altered genes. The altered mice also showed increased susceptibility to liver and kidney damage following treatment.
"We know that these results are applicable to humans because a parallel mutation in the human MTHFR gene affects human folate metabolism similarly. The results demonstrate that medication affects subjects differently according to individual genetic traits," Dr. Rozen explained. "And tests exist to detect this mutation." Genetic testing would allow physicians the modify treatment based on each patient's personal genetic makeup, limiting potential side effects.

NC 'Big twins' tip scales at a combined 23 pounds
Freda Springs, spokeswoman for Forsyth Medical Center, said the twins were delivered two minutes apart by Caesarean section on Tuesday at the center's Sara Lee Center for Women's Health in Winston-Salem.
The boy weighed 10 pounds, 14 ounces; the girl, 12 pounds, 3 ounces. Springs said both babies are in excellent condition after their birth to parents Joey and Erin Maynard of Winston-Salem.
The combined weight of the twins is about four pounds shy of the combined weight of twins born in Arkansas in 1927, the hospital said. Those twins weighed a total of 27 pounds, 12 ounces, hospital researchers said, adding they could find no public record of any heavier twins than the Arkansas pair born since 1900.
They said the Maynard twins topped a 1997 delivery in North Carolina of big twins weighing a total of 18 pounds, 10 ounces.
Sean, tucked in a blue blanket, was held by his mother and his sister, swaddled in pink, was cradled by her father at a hospital news conference Friday. The infants slept quietly through their first public appearance.

A recent study at the University of Pittsburgh has shown that insomnia among U.S. combat veterans returning from Iraq is as severe as that seen in patients with chronic insomnia. The researchers compared veterans with post-deployment adjustment disorders to insomnia patients and good sleepers, and found that the veterans displayed significantly more severe disruptive nocturnal behaviors, such as nightmares and body movements, than people in the other two groups. The researchers also found that the veterans preferred relaxation therapy and pharmacological treatments for their insomnia. The findings were recently presented at the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies.
Many post-9/11 veterans and servicemembers will soon be eligible for a new comprehensive education benefits package. The new bill goes well beyond helping to pay for tuition. Many veterans who served after Sept. 11, 2001, will get full tuition and fees, a new monthly housing stipend, and a $1,000 a year stipend for books and supplies. The new bill also gives Reserve and Guard members who have been activated for more than 90 days since 9/11 access to the same GI Bill benefits. The new GI Bill will soon be on its way to the president for signature, he is expected to sign it by July 4.
A new expansion of a federal program allows medically retired veterans who served less than 20 years to receive Combat-Related Special Compensation (CRSC) benefits. CRSC is awarded by the branch of service that the veteran retired from, not the VA. Medically retired veterans must still provide documentation that shows a causal link between a current VA disability and a combat-related event. For more information, visit Military.com's (http://www.military.com/benefits/military-pay/special-pay/combat-related-special-compensation) Combat-Related Special Compensation webpage.
The House Veterans' Affairs Committee recently approved a bill that would comprehensively address epilepsy treatment and care at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The bill, (http://capwiz.com/military/issues/bills/?bill=11526906) H.R. 2818, provides for the establishment of Epilepsy Centers of Excellence at each of the five polytrauma rehabilitation centers within VA. The bill requires each center to research the long-term effects of epilepsy, develop evidence-based treatment for epilepsy, and coordinate care for veterans that suffer from epilepsy, among other things. The bill was introduced by Rep. (http://capwiz.com/military/bio/?id=2130) Ed Perlmutter (D-CO).
Silver Star Families of America wants to honor the medics who treat those wounded on the battlefield with a certificate of appreciation. To qualify for the certificate, the medic must have been involved in the actual treatment or transportation of wounded servicemembers while serving in a war zone from any war. This honor extends to medics, helicopter pilots, doctors, nurses or anyone directly involved in treating the wounded in a war zone defined by the Defense Department. Nominations for this certificate can be submitted through the organization's (http://www.silverstarfamilies.org/) Silver Star Families of America website.
The publishers of Proceedings magazine are looking for fresh new writers to join their stable of well-known contributors like Colin Powell, John McCain, and James Webb. All active-duty servicemembers -- both enlisted and junior officers -- are encouraged to contribute. No writing experience necessary. As long as you have something important to say, the U.S. Naval Institute can help get the words down. Proceedings has been published continuously since 1874 and USNI is determined to keep that streak going for at least another 134 years. Writers can view the USNI contributor guidelines and submission process online.
The new GI Bill (Chapter 33) or so-called Post-9/11 GI Bill, boasts the most comprehensive education benefits package since the original GI Bill was signed into law in 1944. The new bill goes well beyond helping to pay for tuition; many veterans who served after Sept. 11, 2001, will get full tuition and fees, a new monthly housing stipend, and a $1,000 a year stipend for books and supplies. The new bill also gives Reserve and Guard members who have been activated for more than 90 days since 9/11 access to the same GI Bill benefits. Servicemembers, veterans and their families going through problems related to deployments can get help from a California-based troop-support organization. Members of the group called Patriotic Hearts developed a plan to help families navigate the sometimes-unexpected issues they may face when a loved one returns from the front lines. The plan involves working with spouses of deployed servicemembers to map out welcome-home parties, helping veterans find jobs, and hosting military marriage-enrichment weekends. Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) officials pulled certain types tomatoes off the shelves of military commissaries -- except those in Europe -- after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning that a recent salmonella outbreak has been linked to particular raw red tomatoes. Commissaries outside Europe stopped selling red plum, Roma, or round red tomatoes unless they originate from an "approved area." No sales restrictions have been placed on cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, or tomatoes sold with the vine still attached since these types are not likely to be the source of the outbreak. There are currently approximately 220,000 retirees that fall within in the "gray area" and an additional 12,100 servicemembers retiring and entering this status each year.

Several veterans have testified before a House Veterans Affairs panel that is considering legislation that would require more Pentagon disclosure about the Cold War-era germ and chemical weapons testing in Project SHAD and Project 112 and extend benefits to veterans who participated in them. Veterans say the Pentagon has not acknowledged a link between the tests and health problems, which has made it difficult for veterans to get health coverage. For more information on the testing, visit the (http://www1.va.gov/shad/) VA's Project 112 webpage, the Force Health Protection and Readiness Project 112 and (http://www.deploymentlink.osd.mil/shad/index.jsp) SHAD webpage, the (http://www.vva.org/TaskForce/shad/index.html) Vietnam Veterans of America website, and the (http://www.iom.edu/CMS/3795/4909.aspx) Institute of Medicine's website.

Psalm of Protection
God is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?
God is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
When evil-doers came upon me to eat up my flesh,
even mine adversaries and my foes, they stumbled and fell.
Though a host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear;
though war should rise up against me, even then will I be confident.
- Psalms 27: 1-3
